SNAKES AND BOMBS?
You are probably wondering what snakes and bombs have to do with our coffee. Our Snake Bomb® Coffee project began over a dinner conversation with a group of Lao coffee farmers who were discussing what its like to farm in Laos. We wanted to know how Breyting could help. Their response was simple—help us remove the bombs that are killing our people, help us get antivenin for snake bites, and help us sell our coffee so we can afford to educate our children and help them escape poverty. That’s the story behind the name—Snake + Bomb + Coffee.
This unassuming conversation forever changed our life’s work. In 2005, the Breyting team made a trip to Laos after the 20-year trade restrictions placed against the country were lifted due to changing political systems. It was during this visit that we discovered the Lao farmers’ distinctive Canephora coffee. These beans were once exported exclusively to Europe and Japan, two areas that considered this species to be among the finest coffees in the region.
“BOMBS DID WHAT?”
In the tropical mountains of Laos and Vietnam, family-run farms overlook the Mekong River as it snakes through the countryside. This beautiful scene marks a history as rich and complex as the coffee grown here. Decades ago, intense bombing over ten years forced farmers to migrate high up the mountains to distance themselves from the dangers below. The coffee they grew adapted unexpectedly well to the high altitude, rich volcanic soil, and ample rainfall. This created a rare and distinctive flavor found only in this particular region—the only Canephora in Asia and possibly the world grown from 1,300 meters (4,265 feet) to 1,920.24 meters (6,300 feet). The Southeast Asian conflicts played a devastating role in this forced migration by dropping 270 million sub-munitions (equivalent to a planeload of bombs every eight minutes, around the clock, for nine years). Today, nearly 80 million unexploded bombs remain, and those bombs are still killing and maiming innocent Lao people, including children. We felt compelled to take action.Snake Bomb coffee is our small way of helping to heal this region. The brand has developed a devoted following that has allowed us to make a small but significant difference and made us the longest consistent importer of high-grade Lao Canephora in the United States. Since 2007, A portion of the proceeds from every bag goes toward the removal of unexploded bombs (UXO), UXO victim assistance programs, antivenin projects for snakebites, venomous snake protection programs, and Veterans assistance programs. This year’s donations will go to COPE (Cooperative Orthotic and Prosthetic Enterprise). Learn more about their mission at http://copelaos.org
